DVT/ PE Animation

  • A pulmonary embolism is a blockage of an artery, or arteries, in the lungs, most often caused by a clot broken off from a DVT in the lower extremities. Once the clot breaks off a venous valve in the lower extremity, it travels with blood ow through the inferior vena cava, into the right heart, and out to the lungs through the pulmonary artery.
  • Depending on the size of the embolus, it can occlude the main pulmonary artery, straddle the arterial bifurcation, or disseminate out into the smaller branching arteries of the lungs.
